What is a form 1099-R?

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form 1099-R is used to report the distribution of your retirement income to the IRS for tax purposes. This form will be needed to file your income taxes.

When will I receive my 1099-R?

1099-R forms for all retirees and beneficiaries are scheduled to arrive via the U.S. Postal Service no later than January 31.

Can I pick up my 1099-R at ERFC?

No. Your 1099-R form is mailed to the address you listed in ERFCDirect. The form is also available in your ERFCDirect account. To access it, click "1099-R" under “Benefit Information” on the left menu. 

If you need another copy of your 1099-R, log in to your ERFCDirect account and print one. You can also call our office at 703-426-3900 and ask for a reprint.

Is health, dental, or life insurance premium information included on my 1099-R?

No. This information can be found on your year-to-date benefit information available through your ERFCDirect account.

Can I claim the medical insurance premiums I have paid, on my tax return? 

The answer to this question depends on many factors. If you need tax guidance, we recommend you contact a professional tax advisor regarding this issue.

What does Box 5 contributions mean?

Generally, this amount represents the post-tax contributions you made to ERFC during employment at FCPS.

What does Box 7 distribution code(s) mean?

This code identifies the type of distribution you received. The codes are listed on the back of your 1099-R.

Why did I receive more than one 1099-R?

You may get more than one 1099-R form if you received a retirement benefit and a refund of contributions within the same tax year. You may also receive multiple 1099-Rs if you moved out of state or changed your tax withholding election during the previous year.

I have received more than one 1099-R. Do I need to report those as income on my tax return?

How do I update my contact information?

You can update your contact information through your ERFCDirect account.

How can I change my federal tax withholding?

You can change your federal tax withholdings in ERFCDirect, which includes a feature that allows you to see how much your new tax amount will be depending on what changes you make. This way, you can know your new pension benefit payment amount before you submit a change in your withholdings.

Or you can mail the W-4P Federal Tax Withholding Form to ERFC.

There may be tax penalties if your withholdings are not sufficient.
